How It All Begain

I started boycotting companies and goods as an idealistic teenager by refusing to eat at Taco Bell. I loved them! I still recall feeling so disillusioned to learn about how they were a supportive force in the use and abuse of illegal immigrants in our nation.

I didn't write them, complain, or start a campaign. I simply decided that if I never gave Taco Bell my hard earned cash ever, for the rest of my life, it would be some impact. It wasn't much, but it was all I could do at the time. I never wavered -- I never craved a taco so bad that I had to go back.

Instead, it was the beginning of an important transition -- I was teaching myself early how to stand up for things I believed in, how to have willpower, and how to curb impulsive desires to spend spend spend. It was the beginning of a path to gradually give up other products I formerly "couldn't live without." (And what a great mindset to have during a shaky economy!)

It's not always easy to kick a former fave. product out of your life; we are all constantly surrounded by messages that the true way to be worth anything is to buy into ________ (your product here). There are many pros and cons, like any other decision a person faces. At times it can seem like a very black and white approach but there is certainly wiggle room. Just like when cooking from a recipe, there are many substitutions and alternatives.

So on this blog, I will be making a list of places, products, companies and talking about how/why I've personally chosen to avoid them. I know not everyone will agree with me, but that's okay; that's what free will is all about! Hopefully I'll be able to provide some info for those wishing to boycott too.
